| MILLENNIUM MILE HALL OF FAME Deena Kastor Deena made her MM appearance just a few months after her thrilling Sidney Olympic Marathon bronze medal performance. Prior to the race, she spent hours signing autographs for hundreds of happy fans. Later, the American Record Holder served as the official race starter and jogged with some of the younger runners.
Kevin Sullivan Sully made his MM appearance in 2005. The Canadian native is a 3-time Olympian, has run sub-4:00 over 60 times in his career, and has a personal best of 3:50 on the track. Sully did not disappoint as he won the MM7 with a 3:52, which is tied for #2 on the MM All-Time List.
Katie made two appearances at the MM. In 2002, she won with a then course record 4:27. She returned in '05 to run 4:24 to finish 2nd to Amy Mortimer. A Michigan grad, Katie was a 3-time NCAA Champ for the Wolverines. She has gone onto win the 10,000m at the US Championships in track and on the road.
Andy Downin As one of the original co-founders and a multi-time participant of the Millennium Mile, Andy was very instrumental in making the MM part of what it is today. Andy is only one of 2 male runners to have won the MM twice. In addition, his performance of 3:51 at MM3 in 2001 tied the course record. Andy's career highlight came in 2001 when he won the 1500 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships.
Amy Mortimer Amy made her only MM appearance in 2005 for the MM7. The Kansas native and former Kansas State All American was spending a year getting her Masters at Boston College, so the trip was not too far. To date, Amy's race with Katie McGregor ranks as the most competitive women's race yet. Amy sped away from Katie over the last 1/4 mile to get herself the win and a new course record of 4:20.
Sean O'Brien A NH native, Sean joins Andy Downin as the only other male to win the MM twice. While training with the Farm Team in Palo Alto, CA, Sean returned to NH for the holidays in 2003 to win the MM5 in 3:56. He returned 4 years later to give the course record a scare with his 3:52 victory in MM9. The Princeton graduate won the inaugural Millennium Mile on December 31, 1999. His 3:51 course record remains as the course record- only to be tied by Andy Downin in 2001. Scott was Ivy League Champion, ran for the Reebok Enclave, and was a finalist in the 1996 Olympic Trials at 1500 meters. Scott "Slicko" Anderson has yet to surface since his thrilling victory in 1999.
Bill Spencer The Litchfield, NH resident has set Millennium Mile age records from age 65 to 73. While the Scott Anderson and Andy Downin's 3:51 course record or Amy Mortimer's 4:20 women's record may hold up for a long time, Bill Spencer's time of 5:38 for a 71 year-old man may NEVER be broken. In addition, Spencer dedicates much of his time to mentoring and coaching NH's youth runners and is president of the GateCity Striders Running Club. | |
